What is it?
Glycolic Acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that’s extracted from sugar cane. Its small molecular size allows it to easily penetrate and effectively exfoliate your skin, stimulating cellular renewal to reveal a clearer, brighter and smoother complexion. It’s highly effective at targeting a range of concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne, sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
Using glycolic acid regularly can help brighten the complexion, tighten pores and prevent ingrown hairs. Many acne treatments contain glycolic acid and even though glycolic acid isn’t an acne treatment per se, it can help keep pores free from blockages, thus preventing blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed pimples from forming.
How to incorporate glycolic acid into your routine.
Glycolic acid can be found in a wide range of products such as cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums and face masks. We recommend using glycolic acid to improve the appearance of normal, combination and oily skin types, as well as dull and sun damaged, discoloured skin.
Whenever introducing a new active ingredient into your routine, ease in gently by using the product only a couple times a week and work your way up. It’s important to listen to your skin, if it feels uncomfortable and dry, cut back use and give your skin a rest for a couple of days.
One of the easiest and most effective ways of incorporating glycolic acid into your routine is with a gentle, daily toner such as the Holy Grail Beauty Naturally Radiant AHA Skin Tonic. Its gentle formula is enriched with hydrating botanicals that nourish your skin while the glycolic acid works on improving the appearance of dull, ageing skin, blocked pores and dark spots.
Due to the exfoliating nature of glycolic acid, it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so we recommend using it in the evenings and always protecting your skin with an SPF during the day to avoid risk of sun damage.
